Over the years, we've built many fully functional E-Commerce websites. Our business started in 1997, and by 1999, we had created three fully hand-coded CGI PERL based shopping carts. It's actually gotten a bit easier in some ways (but in other ways, more complicated with PCI Compliance issues).

We were one of the first to create a custom "affiliate program" - for a large business located near Nashville, Tennessee (now retired) which helped them rack up sales with hundreds of incoming links. Over the past 20+ years, we've seen a lot of changes, yet were one of the early pioneers in e-commerce website development. We've been doing it before credit card merchant gateways like Bambora/Beanstream, Elavon, Authorize.net, and Moneris even existed. In those early days, we worked closely with Ontario based "Caledon Card" so our Canadian and American clients could process credit card transactions from their e-commerce websites.

Today, it's a lot faster to build a website with 20,000+ products (our first E-Commerce site contained that many and each webpage was hand-coded) but there are still some very important considerations that many don't think about.
