Safe In A Storm – Lightning Detectors
Up until about 4 years ago, I didn’t even know that there were such things as lightning detectors. Now, I want one!
It was about four years ago that I received a phone call from SkyScan Canada, who wanted some help with their website. Working with this company has been a wonderful experience and we’ve enjoyed it. In addition, one of the most interesting parts about our business is that we get to learn about other businesses and some of the interesting products and/or services they provide. SkyScan Canada has been no exception.
Fly fishing is a major hobby around here, and being stuck out on a river during a thunderstorm is not a pleasant thought. One of the things about Southern Ontario weather in the summer is that lightning and thunderstorms can often blow in without much warning. Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a device that could detect lightning strikes from miles away and have time to find cover and safety?
We’ve learned quite a bit about lightning detectors and that they are available in a variety of price ranges with both portable and permanent mount models. Permanent mount models are perfect for places like golf courses, schools, sports complexes and other locations where public safety is important and knowing about lightning strikes ahead of time can avert a tragedy. The larger permanent installed lightning detection systems have bright visual alerts that can be seen from a distance in addition to loud speaker horns that can sound an alarm at 125 decibels.
Smaller portable units are perfect for where individuals travel and need to be informed ahead of time about possible lightning dangers. Not only individuals or groups of people that are enjoying the outdoors, but outdoor workers as well could benefit from carrying a portable lightning detector with them during those times of the year when lightning strikes are a concern.
According to the BBC, about 24,000 people are struck and killed by lightning each year. Many of these people are boaters, campers and anglers enjoying the outdoors, while others include people who are going about their job outside. Having a lightning detector present could save a lot of lives.
Here in our part of the world, lightning season is beginning and carrying a detector and being warned of lightning strikes in advance will certainly be another tool to ensure safety outdoors.
